How Laser Hair Removal Works
The laser hair removal system offered at our elegant New Jersey spa, is a safe and effective method of removing unwanted hair on women and men of all skin types. It works by selectively destroying the individual hair follicles and bulbs that form the roots of the hair with an intense beam of light. The beam of light is comprised of a specific wavelength designed to target the pigment in the hair follicle and the bulb. When the beam finds the target, it heats up the tissue which destroys the hair follicle and the bulb, while leaving surrounding tissue unaffected. Hair reduction ensues when the cells responsible for forming and growing hair are destroyed.
Areas from Which You Can Remove Unwanted Hair
Laser hair removal can be performed on almost any area where there is hair growth. This includes the face, between the eyebrows, neck, underarms, bikini lines, legs, back, and ears. However, there are certain areas, such as male genitals, on which we do not perform hair removal.
Women may use laser hair removal to eliminate unnatural hair growth, for example on the face, or simply to eliminate the need for future bikini waxes. Excessive hair growth caused by abnormal levels of male hormones (androgens) is fairly common among women, and laser hair removal is an effective remedy.
For men, the back and shoulders are the most common areas of treatment, though they often have hair on the chest, abdomen, ears, and neck removed as well. Some men have treatments to thin out, rather than remove hair completely, on their bodies.
Types of Hair Removal Lasers
At Ethos Spa, we utilize several different types of lasers for hair removal, including:
810 nm Diode Laser by Syneron® is used for lighter skin types, such as Fitzpatrick skin types I, II, III, IV, which include most Caucasian skin from different ethnic backgrounds.
1064 nm Nd:YAG Laser is incredibly safe and effective on all skin types, including on darker skin that many South Americans, Asians, and African Americans have.
Candela® GentleLase® Alexandrite Laser offers the most long-term proven results for all skin types.
Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
Lasers offer several advantages over other hair removal methods, including:
- Shaving, tweezing, depilatories, and waxing are all temporary. Laser hair removal offers a permanent method to remove unwanted hair.
- Waxing includes the potential for allergic reactions, burns, ingrown hairs, and scarring.
- Waxing, plucking, and tweezing are painful.
- Depilatories, hair removal creams, can cause skin irritation and burns, and must be performed weekly.
- Plucking and tweezing are impractical for large areas.
- Plucking and tweezing may lead to pigmentation problems and scarring, especially in patients with darker skin.
Unlike many other spas, Ethos Medical Spa is totally focused and dedicated to providing aesthetic procedures, performed by physicians who are specialists in cosmetic treatments. Using our selection of lasers, we customize a treatment program for each individual client. Our warm and friendly atmosphere will make your visits a pleasure, and the results will thrill you for years to come.
When Will I See Results?
The number of treatments depends on several considerations, including: skin type, hair color, hair thickness and density, and hormonal factors. We typically recommend 4 to 6 treatments to get optimum results. Some people may see a significant reduction after one treatment, while others may need more than 6 treatments.
It is important to recognize that each individual hair undergoes different stages of growth. It is only possible to destroy the hair follicle and bulb while the individual hair is in its active growth phase. Each laser hair removal treatment aims to destroy the portion of the hair which is actively growing. That is why it takes several visits to realize a significant reduction in hair. However, with each treatment there is cumulative damage to the hair follicle and a progressive reduction in the number and diameter of hairs that are growing.
How Much Time Should Pass Between Treatments?
The time between visits varies, depending primarily on location of the hair on the body. For example, hair on the face grows much more quickly than hair on the legs. We recommend treatment on the face every 4 weeks, whereas the time between treatments for the legs can be 6 to 8 weeks. In general, we like to see that clients start experiencing significant hair growth in the treated area before the next visit.
How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Treatment Cost?
The cost of treatments depends on the area for hair removal; larger areas typically require more time to perform the treatments and therefore cost more. Prices range from about $125 per treatment for the lip area to $800 per treatment per leg. Ethos Spa, in Summit and Englewood, New Jersey, offers laser hair removal system packages that provide significant savings for clients who pay in full at the beginning of treatments.
Candidates for Laser Hair Removal
Our premier New Jersey spa offers a laser hair removal system appropriate for all skin types and hair types, though results may vary. The ideal candidate for laser hair removal has fair skin and coarse, dark hair. Lighter hair colors may require more treatments. Skin typing is based on reaction to the sun, eye color, hair color, and ethnic background. Our physicians determine your skin type prior to beginning treatments, as it affects the settings employed on the laser.
